How To Prepare For Your Baby's Newborn Session | RI Newborn Photographer

There’s going to be a tiny new member of your family soon…congratulations! The arrival of a new baby is one of the most joyful experiences a family can experience.

Newborns are tiny and precious, and they also grow surprisingly fast! You’re likely planning on having newborn photos done of your baby, especially if you’re reading this, and that’s a great choice. As a RI newborn photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many newborns and their parents. Capturing your baby’s photo when they’re brand new will allow you to forever remember that time that passes so quickly in a haze of feedings and little sleep and, if you’re a new parent, possibly not knowing what exactly you’re doing and wondering why your baby didn’t come with an owner’s manual!

There are a few things you can do in order to prepare for your newborn’s photo session and come away with images that you’ll treasure forever. Read on for some tips.

PLAN AHEAD.

What exactly do I mean by plan ahead? Book your newborn session well in advance. I recommend a minimum of three months before baby is due. We’ll block off time around your due date as we know babies come on their own time! We want to make sure that we have a spot secured just for you (and your new little one).

THINK ABOUT WHERE THE PHOTOS ARE GOING.

Will the photos be on the wall in your baby’s nursery? Or in another space? What colors are in the room that you’ll be displaying the images in? Or will you have the photos in an album rather than on a wall? All these questions can help determine what colors you may like to have in your images. There are a number of color options we can choose from; I have a selection of backdrops, rugs, and wraps; and we can also switch things up multiple times during a session. We will meet at my studio well before your session to go over all the choices available to you so you can pick what’s perfect for you.

THE DAY OF THE SESSION, KEEP BABY ON HIS/HER ROUTINE.

The day of the session, feed your baby just like normal and let him or her sleep as they usually do. A baby who is kept on his or her routine is a happy baby. We’ll make sure that baby is well fed prior to the start of the session, because a full baby is a sleepy baby, although it’s fine if baby is awake for some photos as well. Awake newborn photos are adorable!

DON’T FORGET TO RELAX.

Being a new parent can be stressful. You’re probably exhausted. That’s fine! Your baby’s newborn session will take awhile; at least two hours is the norm. Take that time to rest, relax, and take a breath. Feel the need to doze off for a little while? Go right ahead. You deserve it.
