3 Ways To Make Sure Your Little Ones Rock Their Photo Session | RI Family Photographer

So you’ve decided that it’s time for some new family photos, or photos of your kids, or maybe a princess session for your little girl. Awesome! That’s absolutely something to get excited about. It can also be something to get a little stressed about. Obviously you want great photos; that’s a given. Especially if you have very young children, though, you might be worried about the session. How will they act? What if they don’t want to pose? How can I best prepare them for the session to make sure the photos come out awesome?

As a RI family photographer, I work with all my families to make sure they are well prepared for their session. There are lots of ways to make sure your little ones are prepared, happy, and have a great session. Here are three of my favorite tips to be sure that your kids have a great session.

•MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAS A FULL BELLY

This may sound like a no-brainer, but it’s sometimes so easy to overlook. Depending on the time you schedule your session, it may be when your kids usually have a meal or snack. You can always eat afterwards, but sometimes little ones get hangry! (I do too…I totally know the feeling). Making sure that kids eat before a session or having snacks on hand to tide them over is SO helpful! Even if your session isn’t during a time you’d normally eat, having some snacks available just in case is never a bad idea. Lots of smiles can be expected from kids who have happy tummies!

•SCHEDULE YOUR SESSION FOR A TIME THAT MAKES SENSE FOR YOUR FAMILY.

A lot of times, parents want sessions where the light looks golden and glowy like many of my images show. Those are generally taken 1-2 hours before sunset, during “golden hour”. Sure, the light is pretty. But especially during summer when the sun sets quite late in the evening, that time of day doesn’t make sense for little kids who have earlier bedtimes. Keeping the child up may just not be an option. If that’s the case, not to worry. We can easily make other times of day work. For outdoor sessions, the photos may look a little different from typical golden hour images, but they’ll still be great (like this image above, which was taken at about 9 am in early August). We can do a studio session any time of day as well.

•RELAX!

This sounds like another no brainer, doesn’t it? But it’s true. You want to have fun at your session and so do your kids. Relax, sit back, and let me handle the rest. If I need you to step in, don’t worry, I’ll let you know! My job is to make everything flow easily for you and your family and get those great photos that make you smile and remember the day happily. Your job is to enjoy the ride. If you’re relaxed, your kids will be too!
